When to Use

Use process lists to help users differentiate between steps in a process and create a hierarchy.

When to Use Another Component

  • Use a progress indicator to show the current step a user is on or for a multi-page process

  • Use table of contents to display a navigational hierarchy of a page

  • Use a list for non-sequential content

Best Practices

  • Keep the number of steps between 3 and 10
  • Use consistent headings
  • Keep step labels concise
