Getting Started with AEM

Moving and Copying Pages

When creating and editing pages, authors may want to move them to another section of AEM, or copy them so as to use the same layout for other content. Both "Move" and "Copy" are options in the toolbar on the sites navigator screen.

Overview

AEM has capabilities to move and copy pages.

Moving pages allows authors to place the page in the right location in AEM.

  • When a page is moved, the page name and URL will change accordingly.
    • As a result, any existing redirects will need to be updated.
  • References to the old page URL in AEM do not need to be updated. Links to the old page will automatically update within AEM.

Copying pages allows authors to use the same page layout or content without reauthoring.

  • When a page is copied, it can be pasted anywhere in AEM.
  • Authors will be prompted to give the copied page a new page name.
    • The page title needs to be changed separately.

Moving a page

For details on site navigation and selecting pages to edit, go to the "Navigating AEM" guide.

In the example below, we will select the page "About Us" from under the Office of Open Records folder. We will retitle the page to "Ariella_TestPage_AboutUs" and rename accordingly. We will then move the page so it lives under the Gaming Control Board section, under the Content Pages TEST folder.
  1. From the Navigation page, click on Sites. You will land on the site hierarchy page.
  2. Each site that is part of CoPA’s AEM instance appears as a folder. The PA.gov site appears under the “CoPA PWP PAGov” folder. The other folders are for Sapient use only, for editing test sites and the Web Content Management site.
  3. Click the site folder to see the sections of the site, then select the appropriate language folder (titled "Home;" named "en").
  4. Click the checkmark to the left of the page name. From the top navigation bar that appears, select Move.
  5. On the Move Page screen, optionally change the page's name and title.
    1. Page title after move: If no change is needed, leave as-is.
    2. Page name after move: If no change is needed, leave as-is.
      1. Note that changing the page name will change the URL.
      2. No special characters may or capital letters may be used.

6. On the site hierarchy page, select the new parent page. The page will move to be underneath this page. Select Next button.

1. If you are only renaming the page, but don't want to move it, leave as-is and select Next button.

7. The screen may show pages to be adjusted/republished, if applicable. Select Move button, then Continue.

8. Back on the Navigation page, refresh the page. The moved page will show in its new location, with its new name and title.

    1. New Site Name field: Enter the name for the new page. This will be in the URL.
    2. Paste Without Children checkbox: If the copied page has child pages, they may either be copied as well, or not. If unchecked, they will copy. If checked, they will not copy.
  8. Select Paste.
  9. The copied page now appears below the new parent page. It still appears in its original location as well.

Copying components from a page

It may be useful to copy several components from one page to another, rather than copying the entire page. The content will remain the same when copy/pasted, and can then be edited on the new page.
  1. Open two pages in edit mode. One is the page from which to copy components (Page A). One is the page on which to paste components (Page B).
  2. On Page A, select components to copy. Select a component, then the "Copy" icon.
    1. To select multiple components at a time, select a component, then the "Group" icon. Then select multiple components, then the "Copy" icon.
  3. On Page B, select a Container on the page. Then select the "Paste" icon. All components will copy onto the page.
