Icons

Icons use simple graphics to convey ideas and concepts. They often support other components.

Overview

Icons add visual interest to a page. They also communicate information and ideas. Icons can symbolize actions, provide feedback, or make it easier to scan a page for a certain section.

Icons are most effective when they're used consistently across a web app or site. This helps the user to recognize common actions or information.

For example, an envelope icon often indicates an email address or a mailing address. If you choose an envelope icon for an email address, then use that icon for all email addresses. Conversely, you should choose a different icon for all mailing addresses. Each icon should have one purpose throughout your web app or site.
